OUR NETWORK
EHFF strives to create a network of colleagues and friends that is as diverse as possible. Inevitably we started with individuals working or knowledgeable in the health and healthcare sphere but we’re steadily working to attract members from other fields of interest in society as a whole.
There are five current Directors, an Advisory Board of eleven close associates and a hundred or so general members of our community. In addition, an important part of our network is the relationship we have with our partner organisations, all included below.

Iseult Conlan
Iseult Conlan is a founding Director of software development company Pangr. The company specialises in App Development, working for more than 8 years in the Irish Language domain as well as working on national campaigns for wellbeing, custom in-house solutions and events and festivals. Iseult has worked in the Charity sector for many years; as Programme Manager for Operation New Life, an Irish charity working with women in Niger, West Africa suffering with obstetric fistula from 2010-2013. For the past 2 years, she has been a Director of Slánú Stroke Rehab, a charity providing support to stroke survivors in the community in County Kerry. She joined the Board of EHFF in 2019.
Agnieszka Daval-Cichon
Agnieszka Daval-Cichon is in charge of EU affairs at Philips. Before that, she worked at the European Commission where she was developing EU public health policies, in particular on patient safety, patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare and health workforce. Before entering the public administration universe, she has been managing international projects mainly in the field of public health education, health systems reforms, health inequalities and an integrated approach to care. She was also editing a magazine, coordinating work between hospital and community care, co-designing a new urban district and ensuring smooth transfers of her family between different countries. She holds master degrees in life sciences and in public health. She cooks well, drives carefully and speaks good Polish, working English and romantic French. Despite several explanatory sessions provided by her children she still doesn’t understand what Twitter is. Agnieszka is a Director for EHFF since 2017.
David Somekh
Dr David Somekh is a forensic psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and experienced clinician in management who retired from the UK NHS eighteen years ago to devote himself to a “portfolio” existence as a management consultant, expert witness and quality advisor. He has been involved in healthcare quality since 1988. Dr. Somekh served as an NGO representative on the Advisory Committee of ISQuA (International Society for Quality Assurance) from 1995-1997, and on the Advisory Committee of the UK NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) from 1999-2004. He was a member of the Executive of the European Society for Quality in Healthcare from 1998, was President 2005-7 and Vice-President 2007-9. He was a member of an EC working group on Patient Safety and Health Quality until it closed in 2016. In 2009 he decided to start a new career as a futurist and has attended courses and meetings at Said School of Business in Oxford on scenario planning and now has links with a number of futures organisations. He has been an active member of the European Summercamp group since 2003. David is the EHFF Network Director, setting up EHFF in 2013 together with Shawn Day, Sean Conlan, Agnieszka Daval and Marius Buiting.
Shawn Day
Shawn Day is Lecturer in Digital Humanities at University College Cork. Formerly he lead the Digital Humanities Observatory, a project of the Royal Irish Academy. He also lectures in Social Computing and the Philosophy of Technology at Trinity College Dublin, Queen’s University Belfast and University College Dublin. His research explores the social and economic circumstances of the nineteenth-century retail liquor trade and its impact on family and social respectability. He applies digital, spatial and social network analysis to the study of the relationships between credit, respectability, and order in the Victorian community. Recent articles have examined the social dimensions of the Victorian public mental hospital using GIS and statistical modeling tools. Shawn has been involved in a number of successful and innovative digital humanities projects throughout Canada and Ireland including the large manuscript census databases in the 1871/1891 census project (University of Guelph), the TAPoR text analysis portal project, the Canadian Network for Economic History (CNEH) and the Network for Canadian History and the Environment (NiCHE – UWO). Shawn is Communications Director for EHFF.
Seán Conlan
Seán Conlan is EHFF Director for External relations, and trained as an electrical engineer. He is formerly the CEO Excellence Ireland 1994-2003 and President of the European Organisation for Quality for 4 years. He was a member of the Board of the ESB (the national Electricity utility in Ireland) from 2007-12. Currently he is a Trustee of Feasta (the Foundation for the Economics of Sustainability).
Tobias Gantner
Tobias Gantner , MD, MBA, LL. M. studied medicine, philosophy, economics and law in Germany, Switzerland, the PR of China and the USA. After his residency in transplant surgery, he worked with Siemens on international consulting mandates. His next positions included Novartis pharma strategy and head of health economics and outcomes research. At Bayer Healthcare, he built the department of Market Access from scratch. He is founder and CEO of the “HealthCare Futurists GmbH”, an international network and think tank from experts of diverse disciplines with a focus on medicine, healthcare and life sciences. His interest goes out to disruptive innovations in the healthcare system in systemic, political and technologic aspects and the change of business models rooted in it. He leads “InAlgorithmo Diagnostics GmbH“, that is dealing with topics in predictive healthcare and the inherent change of business models in the pharmaceutical industry and the approach towards patients and clients. Tobias Gantner holds a number of teaching appointments in the fields of healthcare management, market access and Innovation in healthcare. He is speaker in topics related to the future in healthcare, medicine and life sciences
Marius Buiting
Dr Marius Buiting: Chairman of EHFF Board. Doctor, lawyer and HC improvement expert. Wrote Netherlands Quality law in 1996. Former President ESQH (NGO) and director of NVTZ.
Lucy Scott-Moncrieff
Lucy Scott-Moncrieff is a mental health and human rights solicitor living and working in London. She is a Council Member of the Law Society, was its president in 2012/13 and is currently chair of its Equality and Diversity and Inclusion Committee. She is the independent House of Lords Commissioner for Standards.She founded, owns and manages the law firm Scott-Moncrieff and Associates Ltd, which she believes was the first virtual law firm in the world. It was set up in 1987 and now has nearly 60 lawyers in it, undertaking private client, legal aid and corporate work. She is an associate with Verita, a consultancy that works with regulated organisations to improve their effectiveness and the quality of the services they provide. Between 2008 and 2011, she carried out a number of complex and high profile reviews for Verita, including the death of a patient during routine day surgery, the action of a SHA in relation to the dismissal of a trust chief executive and the care and treatment of spree killer, Daniel Gonzales. She has produced reports on child sexual abuse and exploitation for the Department for Education, and on whistleblowing for the NHS. She sits as a part-time judge of the Mental Health Tribunal. She is co-chair of the International Bar Association’s Access to Justice and Legal Aid Committee which has produced a series of reports on barriers to access to justice around the world during her term. She is a trustee of the Howard League for Penal Reform and of LawWorks, a pro bono charity. Recently has been a non-executive director of the EHFF since 2013.
Rui Loureiro
Rui Loureiro is a Pharmacist with a specialization in Industrial Pharmacy and postgraduate studies in Quality Management and Industrial Engineering, being a funding member of the Portuguese Society for Quality & Safety in HealthCare (APQS). He works for the National Authority of Medicines and Health Products (INFARMED, I.P.) and lectures the topic of Healthcare Quality Management, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon at the graduate and postgraduate level. He has written one book, on medical devices regulatory, classification and quality. He has published more than 20 works on quality in healthcare, and he is an ISO 9001 auditor. He is a non-executive Director on the EHFF Board.
Daniel Steenstra
Professor Daniel Steenstra is the first professor in Medical Innovation in the UK appointed by the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering at Cranfield University. He is an entrepreneur with a unique expertise in healthcare innovation. He has a degree in Medicine and a background in design and innovation in industry across a range of sectors. His brief is to link academia. Industry and the NHS to develop medical and healthcare innovation. Professor Steenstra is also a founder member of Innovations Factory Ltd, a private sector R&D organisation uniquely positioned at the Heart of England NHS Trust in Birmingham.
Jim Phillips
Jim Phillips is currently Director, Quality Institute for Self Management Education and Training, Freelance consultant on self management support, patient engagement and clinical development. Member of European Network for Patient Empowerment (ENOPE). Previous- 2006-2011 Director quality and evaluation Expert Patient Programme CIC 2002-2006 Department of Health Principal Trainer, NHS Expert Patient Programme 1990-2002- Therapist (private practice) – drug and alcohol and long term health conditions. Over 20 years’ experience in behavior change approaches to health.
Ales Bourek
Ales Bourek is CEO of the Center for Healthcare Quality coordinating programs of health system quality management. He also lectures at the Brno Medical School of the Masaryk University. He performs IVF and other forms of of assisted reproduction treatment. He also worked with ESQH (European Society for Quality in Healthcare), DG SANCO, CEESTAHC (Central and Eastern European Society for Technology Assessment in Health Care www.ceestahc.org), EFQM Health Sector Group and other organizations and people interested in quality, accountability, improvement in healthcare and education. Ales also serves on the editorial board of International Journal of Reliable and Quality EHealthcare IJRQEH and International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance IJHCQA.
Mike Bewick
Professor Mike Bewick, has held high profile roles in healthcare, recently retiring from the post of National Deputy Medical Director to Sir Bruce Keogh at NHS England. He has extensive experience across all health sectors and was one of the senior clinicians leading on specialised commissioning at NHSE. He has chaired and then served on the Clinical Priorities Advisory Group (CPAG) and was a member of the Specialised Commissioning Oversight Group (SCOG). He has led on system redesign and the innovations that support such change and worked in challenging health economies. Additionally Mike has led on Primary Care and was the SRO for Revalidation, the first change in licensing for doctors since the inception of the NHS. He was part of the advisory team at NHSE for QOF and Primary Care contracting. He was one of the chief authors of the 10 point workforce plan for Primary Care. Read more…
Matthijs Zwier
Matthijs Zwier is an independent business owner, focussing on enabling change. He is a crazy connector and an experienced networker in and around health, healthcare and society. The ultimate goal is to really make a difference on a happy and healthy life for everybody! Focussing on partnerships with citizens, professionals and organizations/networks, to build capacity and target the ‘wicked problems’.
Matthijs is also a former senior nurse and holds a bachelor degree in nursing and a masters degree in nursing science. He has worked at the University Medical Center of Utrecht for 10 years as a Senior Nurse and transition coordinator. Then decided to make a switch towards quality and healthcare improvement as an advisor. Working as an advisor for the former CBO, he was involved in the National Action Programme Self management, a four year program on the implementation of self management in healthcare (in the Netherlands) and numerous innovation and implementation projects. Matthijs has rich knowledge on Personalized Healthcare, change management and integrated care. As an Senior Advisor he now focuses on Personalized Health, cross sectoral (ex)change management and the concept of ‘causing movement’ and ‘making conversations’ in primary care. He is a member of the Sustainia Global Healthcare Expert Network. Matthijs is an Associate Director of EHFF since 2013.
