From the editor
Europe stands at a crossroads: our health systems generate some of the most valuable data in the world, yet fragmentation and legal barriers continue to hold us back. We cannot afford to let national silos, institutional distrust, or outdated infrastructure limit our ability to deliver better care, accelerate research, and prepare for future health challenges. It’s time to act—decisively and collaboratively—to make health data work for all Europeans.
By investing now in shared infrastructure, clear legal frameworks, and high-impact pilot projects, we lay the groundwork for health systems that are not only smarter and more connected, but also more resilient to the complex challenges of tomorrow—from ageing populations to global pandemics.
The future of Europe’s health systems depends on our ability to harness data in ways that are secure, equitable, and effective. I think federated models should be used to enable real-time insights, faster responses to public health threats, and more personalised care—without compromising privacy or national governance. And you can read more about that in a thought piece on the EHFF website.

BioTechX Europe 2025 – Connecting Innovation, Policy, and Practice in Biotech
October 6–8, 2025 | Congress Center Basel, SwitzerlandBioTechX is Europe’s leading event at the intersection of diagnostics, precision medicine, and digital transformation in pharma and biotech. With over 3,000 participants from industry, academia, healthcare systems, and government, the conference is a key space for exploring the future of data-driven innovation in life sciences.I will be attending this year’s BioTechX to contribute to discussions and share key insights from across our work—especially the latest developments from the ElevateHealth initiative.
ElevateHealth is a cross-sector collaboration focused on rethinking care for people with rare and complex conditions. By modeling patient journeys through the micro (individual), meso (organizational), and macro (system) levels, the project provides tools to strengthen value-based, person-centered care pathways across Europe.
In addition to participating in the main sessions, we will also be organizing a dedicated side event during BioTechX, convening a select group of policymakers, pharma leaders, public health experts, NGOs, and think tanks. The aim is to connect evidence, implementation strategies, and system transformation efforts in a meaningful way.
If you’re attending BioTechX, I’d be delighted to meet—please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’ll be sharing results, lessons, and next steps from ElevateHealth, and look forward to advancing this important dialogue with peers and collaborators from across the ecosystem.
