As World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week #WAAW kicks off, it’s worth asking: how do we make the invisible threat of #AntimicrobialResistance (AMR) visible — and actionable?
At the European Health Futures Forum (EHFF), our AMR Working Group believes that tackling AMR isn’t only about science and policy. It’s also about people, creativity and new digital tools. Through collaboration across Europe and the globe, we’re testing new ways to boost awareness, literacy and action on AMR.
Here are three current projects that show what this future can look like:
🎮 From Play to Prevention – Gamifying AMR Education
Co-created at the Digital Public Health Conference (24–26 July 2025, Madeira) and presented at Digital Health Africa (3–4 September 2025, Charité Berlin) our project, From Play to Prevention’ explores how we can use digital games to address AMR with young people.
The project aims to create a digital developer hub where African and European innovators co-create culturally relevant hygiene and AMR education games. By combining creativity, digital design and behavioural science, the initiative helps young people build digital skills while learning how to prevent infections and use antibiotics responsibly.
This is initiative is in collaboration with: SHINE 2Europe, UK Health Security Agency, SHAFE Foundation, UCL dPHE, Nordic Wellbeing Academy
🗺️ Mapping Resistance – Heat Maps & Wastewater Surveillance
AMR doesn’t just live in hospitals — it travels through our communities, our ecosystems, even our wastewater. In our Heat Map Project we are exploring how wastewater surveillance can be used to track antimicrobial resistance.
By developing heat maps that visualise the prevalence in AMR in wastewater systems, it could help transforming data into timely insight and identify hotspots, guide local action and support prevention of AMR. We are engaging with experts in developing heat maps as well as with experts that can envisage technical solutions for taking and analysing water samples in an effective manner to bring this idea to life.
✏️ AMR Cartoon Campaign – Learning Through Laughter
Complex science can be hard to communicate — so why not make people smile while they learn? Our AMR Cartoon Campaign project aims at using cartoons as an educational tool to make AMR concepts more relatable and engaging for the public.
Currently in its ideation phase, the Working Group is looking for European Design Schools to develop creative briefs and help visualise AMR prevention through humour and storytelling. Interested schools or illustrators across the EU are warmly invited to collaborate.
At EHFF, we believe innovation happens when digital meets design, science meets storytelling, and Europe meets the world.
If you’re passionate about #AMR, #DigitalHealth or #HealthInnovation — join the conversation. Let’s work together to transform awareness into meaningful action.
